Dachshund — Grooming Guide

How Often to Groom

  • Brushing: 1–2 times per week (smooth coat)
  • Brushing: 3–4 times per week (longhair)
  • Brushing: 2–3 times per week (wirehair)
  • Nail trimming: Every 2–3 weeks
  • Ear cleaning: Weekly
  • Bathing: Every 4–6 weeks

About the Dachshund

Dachshunds come in three coat types: smooth, longhair, and wirehair. Smooth coats shed lightly and are low‑maintenance. Longhairs mat behind the ears, in the armpits, and in the feathering. Wirehairs have a harsh outer coat with a soft undercoat and benefit from regular brushing.

Step‑By‑Step Grooming Guide

1. Brush the Coat
Smooth coat: Use a rubber curry brush to remove loose hair. Longhair: Use a slicker brush and metal comb to prevent mats. Wirehair: Use a slicker brush and shedding comb to remove dead coat.

2. Clean the Ears
Dachshunds have floppy ears that trap moisture. Use ear cleaner and cotton to wipe the outer ear weekly.

3. Trim the Nails
Trim every 2–3 weeks. Use a grinder or clippers and take small amounts to avoid cutting the quick.

4. Bathe the Dachshund
Bathe every 4–6 weeks using diluted moisturizing shampoo. Rinse thoroughly to avoid residue on sensitive skin.

5. Dry the Coat
Use a shammy towel, then a microfiber towel. Finish with an HV dryer to remove loose hair and fluff longhair coats.

6. Tidy the Feet & Feathering
Use thinning shears to neaten the feet and lightly tidy longhair feathering.

7. Apply Leave‑In Conditioner
Work a small amount through the coat to reduce dryness and add shine.

Coat Type Notes

Smooth Coat: Low‑maintenance; brush weekly.

Longhair: Prone to mats; brush 3–4 times per week.

Wirehair: Brush regularly; hand‑stripping optional for show coats.

Final Thoughts

Dachshunds are easy to groom with the right routine. Regular brushing and proper drying keep their coat healthy and reduce shedding.

But these tools pay for themselves faster than you think.

A typical groom costs $70–$120. If you go every 4–6 weeks, the tools usually pay for themselves in 3–5 grooms.

But the money isn't even the biggest part.

  • You know exactly how your dog is being treated.
  • No contamination from other dogs.
  • No chance of your dog being drugged without your knowledge.
  • No rough handling behind closed doors.
  • No stress from loud salons or unfamiliar animals.
  • Your dog stays in the place they feel safest — home.

Your dog trusts you more than anyone. Grooming them yourself honors that trust.
