Brittany — Grooming Guide

How Often to Groom

  • Brushing: 2–3 times per week
  • Nail trimming: Monthly
  • Ear cleaning: Weekly
  • Bathing: Every 4–6 weeks

About the Brittany

Brittanys have a medium-length, lightly feathered coat that sheds moderately year-round. Their coat is wash-and-wear, but regular brushing helps prevent tangles in the feathering and keeps the coat healthy. They should never be shaved — their coat protects them from weather and brush while hunting or playing outdoors.

Step‑By‑Step Grooming Guide

1. Brush Out the Coat
Use a slicker brush to remove loose hair and debris. Follow with a metal comb to check for tangles in the feathering.

2. Clean the Ears
Brittanys have floppy ears that trap moisture. Use ear cleaner and cotton to wipe the outer ear.

3. Trim the Nails
Use nail clippers or a grinder. Trim small amounts regularly to avoid cutting the quick.

4. Bathe the Brittany
Bathe every 4–6 weeks. Use diluted de‑shedding shampoo to help loosen dead coat and reduce shedding.

5. Dry the Coat
Use a shammy towel, then a microfiber towel. Finish with an HV dryer to remove loose undercoat and fluff the feathering.

6. Tidy the Feet & Feathering
Use thinning shears to neaten the feet, legs, and light feathering. Avoid over‑trimming — Brittanys should look natural.

7. Apply Leave‑In Conditioner
Work a small amount through the coat to reduce static and add shine.

Eye & Ear Care

Clean the eyes weekly and check the ears for debris or odor. Brittanys can pick up burrs and seeds in the field, so check feathering after outdoor play.

AKC Show Grooming

The Brittany coat should look natural and lightly groomed. Only minimal trimming of the feet and feathering is allowed. The coat should be clean, brushed, and free of loose hair.

Final Thoughts

Brittanys are energetic, affectionate, and easy‑care sporting dogs. With the right tools and a consistent grooming routine, you can keep your Brittany's coat healthy and beautiful year‑round.

But these tools pay for themselves faster than you think.

A typical groom costs $70–$120. If you go every 4–6 weeks, the tools usually pay for themselves in 3–5 grooms.

But the money isn't even the biggest part.

  • You know exactly how your dog is being treated.
  • No contamination from other dogs.
  • No chance of your dog being drugged without your knowledge.
  • No rough handling behind closed doors.
  • No stress from loud salons or unfamiliar animals.
  • Your dog stays in the place they feel safest — home.

Your dog trusts you more than anyone. Grooming them yourself honors that trust.
